Defending the Hudson 1775-1783

One of the first major exhbits to be funded in part and sponsored by Friends of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, "Defending the Hudson 1775-1783," is on display at the Visitor Center at West Point. If you haven't already, we encourage you to see it.

Based on the book, Chaining the Hudson, by local author, Lincoln Diamant, the display takes one through events of the American Revolution and portrays the unique strategy used to win the war.

Since the installation of the display at West Point, over 500,000 guests have traveled through the Visitor Center and the exhibit has been extremely well received.

"Defending the Hudson" has been such a wonderful addition to the center that the Friends have been requested to allow the exhibit to remain on loan for display at West Point for the foreseeable future.

New Bridge over Rt. 9

In the hamlet of Archville a pedestrian /equestrian bridge was erected over Rt. 9 on the old Croton Aqueduct Railway with private donations made to Friends of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. This was one of the first projects funded in part by the Friends with additional support from the Federal Highway Administration. This 160 ft. long, 80 ton bridge replaces the original stone arch bridge that was removed in 1924 to allow for the expansion of Old Albany Post Road. The Old Croton Aqueduct was a popular trail way and demolition of the bridge terminated this linear access until construction of this new bridge in 1998.

Autumn Breakfast - An Autumn Breakfast sponsored by Friends of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve was held at the Rockefeller Playhouse in Pocantico Hills on October 16, 2000 to celebrate the opening of "Carriage Driving; From Whip to Wheel." Funded in part by Friends, the breakfast was open to constituents in gratitude for their tremendous support and interest in the exhibit. See the Spring 2000 issue of the Preserve Observer for more complete info on the exhibit.
