Rockefeller State Park Preserve’s Summer 2008 Calendar of Events: Young Naturalist Program: Pond Study Saturday, August 9 1:30-3:30 p.m. Come explore Swan Lake and discover some of the creatures that call it home. Participants will use nets to collect insects, tadpoles and small fish to see how they are adapted to this underwater environment. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited Birds and Bagels Saturday, August 30 7:00-10:00 a.m. Enjoy a morning of coffee, bagels, and birds with our friends from Wild Birds Unlimited. They will provide coffee and bagels and the Preserve will provide the birds. Creative Writing Workshop Series: Gathering Natures Abundance Sundays, August 17, October 19, December 7 1:30- 3:30 p.m. Join facilitator Karen Rippstein at Rockefeller State Park Preserve for an afternoon of creative writing as you listen to the songs of birds. How might the Preserve’s landscape inspire you to explore, reflect, and create as you transform your words into meaningful prose or poetry? Please bring pen, notebook, water, and a camera. We usually take a short walk to Swan Lake weather permitting. Themes vary at each workshop. Sign up for one or as many of the six workshops scattered throughout the year. Be sure to add your name to the mailing list to receive information and scheduled dates prior to each workshop. This program is open to people 16 years old and older. What I Whisper to My Journal© Thursdays, August 7, 14 & 21 7:00-8:30 PM What secrets will you discover between the oaks and pines at Rockefeller State Park Preserve? Join facilitator, Karen Rippstein, for journal writing and sketching to capture the spirit and solitude of nature’s abundance. Please bring pen, notebook, and/or sketchbook, blanket, camera, and a bottle of water. Please note there will be some walking involved with this program. This program is open to people 15 years old and older. Each session stands on its own or sign up for all 3. $20 per individual session or $50 for three Fee: payable by check only to “Natural Heritage Trust.” Evening Wildlife Walks Friday, August 8 6:30-8:00 p.m. Come explore the Rockefeller State Park Preserve’s wildlife at dusk. Many of the Preserve’s creatures are active at night during the hot summer months. Park staff will help participants identify these evening dwelling creatures as well as teach about their habits. Bring along a pair of binoculars and any field guides you may have for an enjoyable evening walk. This program is appropriate for anyone age 10 and up. Climate Change Saturday, August 30 1:00-3:00 p.m. Climate change is becoming an increasing issue of concern. Join us for a walk that will examine and discuss examples of this impact in The Preserve. This walk will raise awareness into the diverse effects of climate change and how they are affecting Preserve policy. The preserve is filled with examples of this change. Coyote Lecture Saturday, September 13 1:00 p.m. Daniel Bogan, a PhD. student with Cornell Cooperative Extension, is working on an 8 year study on the behavioral ecology of coyotes living amongst humans. He will discuss the current research and management issues of coyotes living in the suburbs with an overview of coyote ecology and behavior. Program Fees: Adults $5 Seniors (age 62 and over) $4 Children (age 6-12 yrs. old) $3 Program fees apply to all programs unless otherwise stated. An additional $6 parking fee may also apply.
