Rockwood Hall Entry Project

In 2023, the Friends of Rockefeller State Park Preserve launched an ambitious, multi-year fundraising campaign to reimagine the gateway to Rockwood Hall—unlocking its full potential as a vibrant, welcoming destination for all.

The Rockefeller State Park Preserve spans over 1,700 acres, with the Preserve section situated east of NYS Route 9, and Rockwood Hall (the Park section) located to the west. While The Preserve offers robust amenities and infrastructure, the Rockwood Hall area, though incredibly popular, has long lacked the resources to truly support its visitors. This transformative initiative aims to change that.

Once complete, the revitalization project will address critical safety issues, enhance the visitor experience, and introduce environmentally sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the land. With its sweeping views of the Hudson River and rich history, Rockwood Hall holds unparalleled potential to become a centerpiece of community connection and outdoor exploration.

Currently, only 4 out of the Preserve’s 100+ annual programs are held at Rockwood Hall due to limited infrastructure. This project will change that—unlocking the ability to host a broader range of educational, cultural, and inclusive events for people of all ages and abilities.

One of the most pressing issues is the undersized parking lot, which forces visitors to park along roadways, creating unsafe conditions and stressing the surrounding wetlands. The planned expansion will add 30 much-needed spaces, including two accessible spots, and bus parking. Opening Rockwood Hall up to programming geared towards school groups.

With upgraded restrooms, safe and expanded parking, and greater capacity for community programs and school visits, Rockwood Hall is poised to become a more vibrant, inclusive, and environmentally responsible destination—where nature, history, and people come together.

The Friends gratefully acknowledges Preserve manager Peter Iskenderian and New York State Parks for their ongoing collaboration and support in advancing this project.

Proposed design: restrooms, parking (30 additional spots, plus bus parking) and landscaping.

EXISTING conditions: 19 parking spots, no restrooms, undefined entry. Not EQUIPPED to handle youth groups.
